Hovenia Dulcis

Hovenia Dulcis

Hovenia Dulcis, also known as Japanese raisin tree, is one of the major components of Fewer Regrets. Not only was it known for centuries as an effective way to avoid hangovers by nibbling on the berries of the Japanese raisin trees before drinking alcoholic beverages, it is documented as such a remedy in pharmacy records throughout centuries.

Modern investigations have borne out the effectiveness of Hovenia Dulcis. In countries like Japan, Thailand, China, Korea and other Asian countries Hovenia Dulcis is used as a popular dietary supplement and in traditional medicine. It is known as an ancient practice and as modern supplement found on the shelf in stores, in extracts, capsules, fresh or dried or as a tea and used for many things including hangovers and detoxification of the liver, fighting parasites, stabilizing blood sugar levels or for liver disease. Some people still chew on the berries from their own trees, using the fruit or the stem that holds the berries, which is known as the peduncle.  The product tastes something like the mixture of sugar, raisin, cinnamon and cloves.

Hovenia Dulcis works with the body’s enzymes to break down alcohol, shortening the process so that one can avoid the morning-after effects they might otherwise encounter, eliminating the lethargy, headache and fatigue of a hangover from consumption of alcohol which often may last as long as 24 hours. The nutrients from the peduncles of Hovenia Dulcis also lend themselves to treatment of liver diseases and alcohol toxicity.

There are studies that indicate Hovenia Dulcis may also protect the liver from the damage that can occur from drinking alcohol, by reducing the levels of alcohol and acetaldehyde. The same studies showing a reduction of circulating alcohol also reflect some protection for the liver, helping to protect against fatty liver and yielding a lover ALT, AST and y-GT levels.

A study of hangovers tested to see what it was that caused hangovers and found that it is very difficult to determine exactly what kinds of alcohol consumption, under what conditions and timing, produces a worse hangover, as there many factors in effect, such as type of alcohol, brand-and the usage of add-ons, time of day and individual circadian rhythms and timing of subsequent drinks. Even the symptoms experienced by individuals are different although there are predictable things that are incurred, including tiredness, headaches. thirstiness, dizziness, nausea, etc.
